SoFi Innovates Access to Student Loans

An advisor for Blue Sky Financial, Frank Cardia has facilitated more than $1 billion in venture capital funding transactions in his 24-year career. Frank Cardia manages the Iron Edge VC Fund, which enables investors to acquire equity in businesses before their initial public offerings.

Included in the Iron Edge portfolio is SoFi (Social Finance, Inc.) a bank that offers a wide range of services. It is often perceived as a bank with a popular app, but its primary focus is providing innovative money management.

SoFi, the brainchild of four graduates of the Stanford Business School, grew out of dissatisfaction with the student loan system. The founders connected some 100 students to 40 Stanford alumni, who personally arranged loans up to $20,000. The borrowers got a reasonable interest rate, and the alumni received a good return on investment. Four years later, SoFi had become the world’s largest student loan provider.

In additional to conventional loans, SoFi arranges debt consolidation for parents who contribute to their children’s education, plus lower-than-usual interest for graduate students in law and business. Medical students can consolidate their loans with no interest compounded during residency.
